Casino licence verification

A casino company number is not evidence of a gambling licence

Separate a company record, a trading name and a Gambling Commission account before deciding what an online casino’s identity documents establish.

First establish what the number identifies

A company-registration record and a gambling-licence record answer different questions. The first can help establish a business’s recorded corporate identity. The second is where you check the gambling activity and licence status.

Finding a company does not complete the licence check, even when its name matches the online casino’s footer.

For a Great Britain-facing online casino, use the Gambling Commission’s business register to investigate the claimed gambling authorisation. The Commission’s remote casino licence guidance describes the permission relevant to providing casino facilities remotely. A corporate entry cannot stand in for that permission.

Begin by copying the label beside the number. “Company number”, “account number” and “licence number” should occupy separate boxes on the worksheet. Do not strip a prefix or shorten an identifier to make two records look alike.

This is a verification procedure for business claims, not a request for the player’s passport, identity number or account documents.

A different trading name is a lead, not a verdict

GOV.UK’s company-naming guidance explains that a business can trade under a name different from its registered name. A casino brand and a legal business name can therefore differ without that difference, on its own, resolving whether the site is properly licensed. The task is to document the relationship.

The Commission’s explanation of white-label arrangements places responsibility for gambling activity with the licence holder. It also says the operator, rather than each domain as a separate entity, is the licensee. That is why a brand name should not be treated as if it necessarily names the licensed business.

Write down the brand as displayed, the legal entity claimed in the terms and the exact domain you visited. Keep the source location for each: a footer, terms page or regulator entry. If those sources disagree, describe the mismatch.

Neither a familiar logo nor an attractive corporate history supplies the missing relationship. This article does not assess a particular white-label contract or decide a dispute between businesses.

Use Companies House for the question it can answer

The official company-information service lists records such as registered address, incorporation date, officers, previous company names and insolvency information. Those fields can help investigate why two corporate documents use different names or addresses. They should remain attached to the company entry from which they were taken.

If an older legal name appears in a document, a recorded name history may provide an explanation. Check whether the dates fit before treating it as the same entity. A similar spelling is not an identification method.

Preserve the company number and record URL alongside the name so that another reader can revisit the exact entry.

This is a proposed use of the official service, not a report that we searched or verified a particular Companies House company. We have not collected a company record for the named gambling business in the example below. That distinction prevents a method article from quietly becoming an unsupported cross-register match.

Corporate information is supplementary evidence; it does not replace the gambling register’s activity and status fields.

The Commission’s account number has its own meaning

The Commission defines its account number as the unique reference for the business and its account name as the legal business name. The register accepts searches by business name, trading name, domain or account number. These are different routes into the same evidence system, not interchangeable kinds of identifier.

Keep the account number exactly as the register supplies it. Then inspect the activity rows and the associated licence details. A result reached through one brand name does not prove that every similarly named website belongs to the business.

The domain field needs its own check.

There is a built-in limit to this evidence. The Commission says businesses supply their trading-name and domain-name information and it cannot guarantee the accuracy of third-party information. A dated register match is therefore a carefully scoped observation.

It is not a security audit, a guarantee of service quality or a promise that an account will never encounter a problem.

A real identifier comparison, with its boundary intact

On 19 September 2026, the retrieved licence summary for WHG (International) Limited showed account number 39225. Its remote Casino row showed the longer licence identifier 039225-R-319373-015, an Active status and an activity-from date of 1 November 2014. The domain list showed www.williamhill.com as Active.

The summary gave a Gibraltar head-office address.

These observations demonstrate why a worksheet needs distinct account and licence fields. The account reference and the longer licence string are not competing versions of a Companies House number. They occur in a gambling-regulator record and must be described in that context.

The example stops there. We did not inspect a current William Hill footer, retrieve its incorporation record, test its gambling service or audit its regulatory history for this article. The Gibraltar address is not evidence of a particular incorporation history or of permission in every country.

It illustrates another reason to avoid assuming that a British gambling authorisation and a UK corporate-registration entry are the same document.

Complete the two-register evidence sheet

The comparison table separates observed evidence from the information a fuller enquiry would still need. Its company row is deliberately unfilled. Completing it would require identifying the appropriate corporate register and retrieving the exact entity’s record; it would not mean copying the casino’s brand name into an unrelated company search result.

For a synthetic example, imagine a footer that names “Example Leisure Limited” and supplies a company number, but gives no gambling account reference. A matching corporate record would support only the corporate match. You would still need the gambling register, the relevant activity and the exact domain relationship before writing a conclusion about authorisation.

No real company is represented by that invented name.

Use one status per evidence question: matched, mismatch or unresolved. A single green tick for the whole website hides what has actually been checked. The worksheet is intended to expose a missing connection, including the possibility that the available documents are insufficient.

How to complete the two-register evidence sheet

The worksheet the prose describes, step by step. It is intended to expose a missing connection, including the possibility that the available documents are insufficient.

  1. Copy the label beside each number

Company number, account number and licence number occupy separate boxes. Do not strip a prefix or shorten an identifier to make two records look alike.

  2. Record the brand, the legal entity and the domain

Write down the brand as displayed, the legal entity claimed in the terms and the exact domain you visited. Keep the source location for each.

  3. Open the Gambling Commission register

Keep the account number exactly as the register supplies it. Then inspect the activity rows and the associated licence details; the domain field needs its own check.

  4. Use Companies House for the corporate question only

A recorded name history may explain an older legal name; check whether the dates fit. Corporate information is supplementary evidence and does not replace the register’s activity and status fields.

  5. Give each evidence question one status

Matched, mismatch or unresolved. A single green tick for the whole website hides what has actually been checked.

  6. What the result means

A useful finding says which entity, activity and domain were recorded, when the material was read and which connection remains unverified. An unresolved check is a reason not to proceed with a deposit on the strength of that claim.

Resolve a mismatch without enlarging the claim

If a footer and register record name different businesses, keep both texts and their dates. Check the exact domain, the account reference and any relevant previous-name history before deciding that the difference is explained. A name change, a brand relationship and a different operator are separate possibilities; none should be selected merely because it sounds plausible.

Ask the business to clarify the exact legal entity and regulator reference through its official contact route. If you report a concern to the regulator, include the page addresses and the specific mismatch. Avoid posting personal account material in a public evidence note.

A clean record of the conflicting claims is more useful than an accusation that outruns the documents.

An unresolved identity or authorisation check is a reason not to proceed with a deposit on the strength of that claim. You do not need to fund an account to settle a documentary question. This procedure does not determine compensation, complaint outcomes or whether a particular act meets a legal test.

When a check fails — what to do

Keep the conclusion tied to the retrieval date

A useful finding says which entity, activity and domain were recorded, when the material was read and which connection remains unverified. It should not say merely that a site is “legit”. That word can conceal several unperformed checks, from cybersecurity to payment practices.

Reopen the relevant official record when you need a current answer. Retain the earlier observation as history instead of overwriting it with a fresh retrieval date. If the activity or domain status has changed, the new note should make that change visible.

For this article, the result is an identifier comparison and a repeatable worksheet. It is not a present-day endorsement of William Hill or any other operator. The scope is Great Britain gambling authorisation and supporting corporate identity evidence, not a claim that every UK or overseas customer is covered in the same way.

Gambling can cause harm; a verified business record does not remove that risk.

The register’s record of whether a licensed activity was Active, or otherwise, at the date the entry was read.
Trading name
A name a business uses that differs from its registered company name; GOV.UK guidance says a business may do this.

Questions answered

How can I check a casino license?

Use the relevant regulator’s own register. For a Great Britain claim, compare the named business, relevant remote Casino activity, status and exact domain in the Gambling Commission record, retaining the date checked.

How to check if an online casino is real?

Break that broad question into verifiable claims. A company entry, a functioning website and a gambling licence establish different things; none alone is a complete safety assessment.

What does the register show that a website footer does not?

The Commission’s record provides regulator-held fields such as business account, licensed activities and status. The footer is the website’s claim, which should be compared with those records.

Can a business trade under a different company name?

GOV.UK explains that a business can use a trading name different from its registered name. For a casino, the relationship to the licensed entity and exact domain still needs evidence.

Is a Gambling Commission account number the company number?

No. The Commission describes its account number as the unique reference for the gambling business in its register. Keep that reference separate from any corporate-registration identifier and the longer licence number.

What status should each line of the evidence sheet carry?

Use one status per evidence question: matched, mismatch or unresolved. A single green tick for the whole website hides what has actually been checked.

What did the WHG example actually record?

On 19 September 2026 the retrieved licence summary for WHG (International) Limited showed account number 39225, a remote Casino row with licence identifier 039225-R-319373-015 and an Active status, and www.williamhill.com listed as Active. No current footer or incorporation record was inspected.
